Interview with photographer Javier Galue

Javier Galue was born in Cadiz, Spain. He has traveled to Latin-America, USA, Switzerland and  returned back  to Spain where he lives at the moment. He has studied architecture, film directing and film production. One day he realized he had more passion for photography than for making movies, so from that day on he started working for magazines.  He has his own studio in Madrid and he has worked with well-known brands such as Avon, Nike, Nintendo, InStyle Magazine and Britain’s Next Top Model TV!

DF- Where’s home at the moment?
JG- In Madrid, Spain

DF- How long have you been a photographer?
JG- 1992

DF- Who or what influenced you to start taking photographs?
JG- fashion magazines and art magazines

DF-Did you go to school to study photography?
JG- No, I didn’t… In my first months I used my knowledge that I got from video production and after that I taught myself photography by analyzing more dan 300 photos a day, so I would have a solid criteria in photography.

DF-How would you describe your style?
JG-  I like powerful women, strong images and I like to play with forms…

DFA photographer who inspires you?
JG- My inspiration comes from photographers,  movies, music, paintings, sculptures etc.

DF-Do you work with an assistant? If so, what do you look for in an assistant?
JG- Yes I do have an assistant. In my case an assistant needs to be good in handing gear and need to have  organization skills.

DF-Do you listen to music while you’re shooting? And if so who are your favorite artists
to listen to while you’re working?
JG- Yes. It depends on what the atmosphere is I need to create. But most of the time the music I use is more for the model than for me. I ask her or him to be a certain character (as in directing a movie) and put the specific music on that can help to make the “ambience” for this character.

DF- Do you prefer Black & White or Color?
JG- Both, depends on the concept, the client, the media, etc…

DF- Is there a specific person you would love to take a photo of?
JG- Not specifically. But let me give a great thanks to all the models who’ve posed for me in my first days as a photographer… I feel  so sorry for them hahaha!

DF-Do you shoot digital or film?
JG- Yes, I shoot with my Canon EOS 1Ds and Hasselblad.

DF- What’s your favorite piece of equipment?
JG- My 24-70mm 2.8 canon

DF- If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
JG- 24-70mm 2.8 Canon because of its versatility and  the quality of image that it gives.

DF- What lightning equipment do you take on a shoot?
JG-  I usually use Profoto but other brands are great too.

DF- How important is Photoshop in your final images?
JG- As important as the camera and lens…

DF- Are you a Mac or PC lover?
JG- PC (since 1997)

DF-The hardest part of your job?
JG- Some clients…

DF-Where is your favorite place to live and work as a photographer in the World and why?
JG- For shooting, location wise I would choose Switzerland and Spain. For marketing purposes I would choose London and New York.

DF-Where would you like to retire?
JG- Anywhere in the world I will be happy as long I have my family with me.

DF- What advice do you have for someone who want to pursue a career in photography?
JG- They need to be determined and they need to have their own style, their own personality and their own goals!
